Local Governing Body to Academy Improvement Board (AIB)
Following various governance reviews which took place in the summer term of 2021, it was highlighted that there were a number of areas that required rapid improvement in the governance of the school. On 26th November 2021, Central Lancaster High School Governing Body moved towards a more streamlined pattern of governance with a change from a local Governing Body to an Academy Improvement Board.
The Bay Learning Trust (“the Trust”) is committed to excellent governance, which is fit for purpose. When an academy requires focused attention to secure rapid improvement the Trustees will put in place an AIB.
The AIB of Central Lancaster High School was constituted by the Trustees of the Bay Learning Trust from 26 November 2021. The terms of reference for the AIB which set out the membership, quorum and meeting requirements for the AIB and are able to view below in the documents section.
The AIB shall be in place until such time as the Trustees are satisfied that the required improvement at the Academy has been achieved. The Trustees in their absolute discretion shall determine when the AIB shall transition to a standard Local Governing Body with an adjusted scheme of delegation and revised terms of reference.
The members of the AIB have be appointed by the Trustees. The Trustees may delegate the power of appointment to the Chair of Trustees or any of their number. If the Chair or Vice Chair of Trustees determines that it appropriate to respond to a particular need that may arise, any Trustee may take up a position on the AIB for any time period required and will be fully authorised to participate in any AIB business including any roles or panels required under a policy or procedure.
All members of the AIB must submit to the relevant checks for their suitability to be engaged in the management of an independent school and in accordance with the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education (as amended).
The membership of this AIB is limited to eight members.
CLHS Academy Improvement Board
Matt Auger qualified as a teacher, from the University of Leeds in 2000. He has worked in five schools in his career all characterised by higher than the national average disadvantaged pupils and attainment on entry that is below the national average. He has held senior leadership positions in each school, with experience in Pastoral and SEND but predominantly in curriculum and teaching and learning. His experience in senior leadership roles totals 14 years and has included latterly, work for the Bay Learning Trust in a range of schools including a Primary school for two terms.
At present, Matt is working at Central Lancaster High School covering a maternity position at Assistant Principal level with a focus on Teaching and Learning. Additionally, Matt is working in Initial Teacher Training as a lead subject mentor, personal tutor and trainer. In addition to teaching, Matt has been Chair of Directors for an Outdoor Activities charity and has been involved in the music industry.
Prior to starting his teaching career in 1999, John qualified as a Mechanical Engineer, employed by a local plastic moulding company who manufactured products for Black and Decker, Motorola and GEC.
Central Lancaster High School is the fourth school John has worked in. He has spent over half of his time in the profession on Senior Leadership Teams holding responsibility, predominantly, for all aspects of pastoral care and pupil progress.
A keen sportsman, unfortunately due to injury, John’s time is now spent watching sport rather than playing.
|Alexis Holden (Chair)|
Alexis Holden started at UCLan in 1992 as a Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry, after completing a PhD at Strathclyde University and a BSc (Hons) in Medical Sciences and Chemistry at Leicester Polytechnic.
She was a frontline academic for 10 years performing research, teaching, and administration. During that time, she was an active member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Honorary Secretary of the Analytical Division of the RSC, and a Trustee of the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund.
At the start of 2021, Uclan merged Research Services with the Innovation and Enterprise Service and Alexis took on the role as Director of the new Service. In this role she leads a team of approx. 120 people. She is responsible for developing and delivering the university research, innovation and enterprise strategy, by managing and leading a Service which is skilled and knowledgeable and supported.
In any spare time, Alexis enjoys pottering in the garden, swimming and supporting family life with her son who attends Central Lancaster High School.
|Andrew McKinnell is the Chief Operating Officer / Chief Finance Officer for the Bay Learning Trust. Andrew was appointed by the Trust in 2016 and has worked as a Senior Leader in schools since 2003.|
Anne has taught for 35 years, although she has predominantly worked in 11-18 comprehensive schools, she has also taught in both primary and special schools as well as delivering modules to both post graduate and under graduate students.
Initial trained as a Specialist PE and Special Needs teacher, her teaching career began teaching PE and Outdoor Education, before she moved into pastoral leadership as Head of Year 7 and Primary Transition. She has spent the last 15 years in Special Needs working as a Specialist Teacher for Dyslexia and SENDCo.
Anne retired from teaching in July 2021, however she continues to work freelance as a Specialist Teacher and Assessor assessing and tutoring children in the local area. She is also working with the Bay Learning Trust as a Special Needs Consultant supporting two new SENDCos develop their skills and expertise.
Outside of work, Anne enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dog either locally or on the fells and horse riding.
Phil Wood was educated at Ashton-under-Lyne Grammar School. He attended Hull University where he gained a BA History 1977 – 1980 and a PGCE 1980-81. He went to Nottingham University gaining an MA History 1987-89. At Edge Hill University he undertook a Post Graduate Certificate in Education Management 1994-95.
His teaching career included; Teacher of History 1981-2018, Deputy Headteacher Hodgson High School 1993-97, Headteacher Hodgson High School 1997-2002 and Headteacher Lytham St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College 2002-2018.
He is an Additional Inspector with OFSTED 2013 to present day
Paul Young is a senior climate specialist for JBA Risk Management and a visiting researcher at Lancaster University. His work and expertise embraces climate change, air pollution, and the ozone layer, and has experience teaching high school-level maths to first year undergraduates and climate science to masters students in his former role as a Lancaster University faculty member.
He grew up in Portsmouth, completed degrees at Bristol and Cambridge Universities, and lived and worked in Colorado for four years before moving to Lancaster in 2012. He lives with his wife Joanna in Heysham with their three children, two of whom attend Central Lancaster High School.
|I currently work as the Trust Accountant for the Bay Learning Trust. I am a qualified chartered account-ant as well as being a qualified teacher with a degree from the University of Cumbria. I grew up in Lan-caster and went to secondary school at Ripley St Thomas, as well as attending Christ Church C of E Pri-mary just up the road. I love this area and I am passionate about improving the educational opportuni-ties of the children who live here. In my spare time I am a semi professional footballer playing for Lan-caster City FC.|
